Mukai Fruit Barreling Plant

Project
Mukai Fruit Barreling Plant

Client
Friends of Mukai

Architect
Hoshide Wanzer Architects

B+E is helping the Friends of Mukai renovate a 6,800 SF historical fruit barreling plant on Vashon Island into a facility that will provide tenant space for local garden and food processors.

Potential tenants include a local gardening collective, a Japanese traditional fermenter and a group that processes and sells locally grown grain.

The historical property featuring a Japanese garden, the original family-owned farmhouse and the fruit barreling plant tell the story of the Mukai family's experience in America from their first arrival in the 1920's through the creation of a vibrant business that transformed the way fruit was sold throughout the country, and the unfortunate events surrounding the family's experience during interment during WWII.
